CHAPTER

THIRTEEN

Ella and Cade grabbed their things and lugged the heavy bags upstairs to one of three bedrooms on the second floor. After unpacking, they joined the others downstairs in the living room.

The two couches and matching chair were all upholstered in a thick, almost burlap material that looked like it should be rough on the skin but was actually quite soft. It was a dark gray color with light wooden accents that matched the wood used for the cabin. Once Ella sat, the feel of the material thrust her into a memory. A memory about Jude. A memory her mind wouldn’t let wither and die.

One particular night, when the air was too warm and the temperature about the cabin drew the sweat from every pore, she had the feeling that something was watching her. Like whoever or whatever was there, their eyeballs just millimeters above the lip of the window sill, staring. She opened her eyes slowly to find Jude with his shorts off, shirt on, a raging hard-on in his pale hand.

She shivered despite the warmth settling in her stomach, the sign of a strong brew.

She dismissed the memory like a nagging fly with a flick of her hand and set her drink on the dark oak table.

“It’s great to be back,” she said. “Five years is a long time.” She sounded nasally. Robotic. Insecure about what she’d just said.

“I agree,” Rebecca added, “About how great it is to be back. I missed this.”

Jude’s warm smile said all Ella needed to know. He still had feelings for Rebecca. Even with Samuel clinging to her leg in an obvious show meant for Jude, it didn’t seem to matter.

“Drink up! I had this brandy imported from France especially for this occasion.” Jude held up his glass. “To friends!” The rest of the group raised theirs and toasted to their rekindled friendship. “Maybe Cade can whip us up something good for dinner tonight. What do you say?”

Cade took a sip of his brandy then stared into the glass, nodding, “I’d love to.”

By the time they finished the bottle, Ella could barely keep her eyes open. The room was spinning slowly. Cade’s voice seemed distant and when Rebecca spoke, it was jumbled and undecipherable. Everything felt off. She tried to stand, pushing herself unsteadily off the couch and fell back. The buttery soft fabric enveloped her.

“What’s…” she slurred, unable to get the rest out. She wanted to ask what was going on. Yes, that was what she meant to say. Her tongue felt fat in her mouth.

The brandy must have struck hard. She’d been used to all kinds of substances in her body. She and Cade weren’t shy from experimenting with new things, but this was different. Her muscles felt unresponsive, like they were made of jelly and refused any command. The synapses fired but there was no response from the muscles.
